helping craft the next generation of show-business professionals
In addition to his work as a performer, Thomas is also a passionate coach and believes strongly in encouraging, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of show-business professionals.
When first asked:
"would you ever consider directing?"
Thomas quickly said:
"no, I'm only interested in being in the spotlight"
Soon enough he ate those words and found himself working as an assistant director on many projects including Aladdin & His Magic Lamp, Oklahoma and The Wizard of Oz. These early experiences lit a fire under Armstrong-Robley awakening his passion for mentoring young, driven creatives.
He would begin directing independently in early 2015 with his adaptation of Cinderella: The Pantomime. This early success at the helm of a production would lead to a new under 25 version of Grease which earned rave reviews and saw Thomas venture into teaching. He would begin coaching a Senior Drama Troupe to success on the Drama Festival Circuit. His staging of Like A Metaphor which featured a cast of students between the ages of 11 and 16 would earn over 20 awards at various theatres throughout Queensland, Australia including Best Play wins in both Youth & Open categories. This play and his adaptation of You're Next would also earn Thomas his first accolade as a director.
In late 2015, Thomas was given the reins of an exciting project, preparing a team to compete in the iTheatrics Junior Theatre Festival. He would lead the team of 12 under 18's across the globe to Atlanta, GA in the United States. This team, the sole representatives of Australia would earn a near perfect 98% overall score from the judging panel and take out 3 major awards at the festival. This young cast would return to Australia and stage a successful season of Into the Woods Jr.
The next 12 months would see Thomas in the directors chair for major productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Wizard of Oz for Gateway Theatre Productions which featured stars from The X-Factor, The Voice and even Channel 7 news anchors. During this period he would also begin privately coaching high school graduates for upcoming university auditions, thus far all of his private students have received offers.
Travelling extensively since 2017, Thomas still finds time to run occasional masterclasses and school holiday workshops. He most recently directed a holiday production of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
Thomas is incredibly excited to be developing a brand new programme for aspiring artists alongside Broadway performers, renowned creatives and award winning artists. The modular course is part motivational keynote presentation, part masterclass and part workshop. 'Uncovering The Artist: Potential to Professional' is designed to help young artists take their career into their own hands and unleash their raw potential by offering students unique perspectives, simple shortcuts and demanding quality of the participants. It is an uniquely honest approach to performance education and is highly recommended for anyone who wants to go from 'just another aspiring artist' to a 'valuable, profitable show-business professional'.
